The
first floor of "Podestà Palace" was transformed into municipal theatre
in 1970 by the architect Pietro Moggi's plan. It was open to public in
1824 even if unfinished and it was called
"Lion Theatre".
Some changes
were brought in 1843, 1867, and 1876. Luigi Ruffini from Falerone was
called to paint the whole theatre. He also painted on the ceiling six
medallions representing six famous characters: three men of letters
(Metastasio - Alfieri - Goldoni) and three musicians (Bellini, Rossini,
Verdi).
The theatre has a "U" shape and the boxes are fifty: sixteen
first-tier box, seventeen second-tier and thirdtier box. In 1894 the
theatre was called "Luigi Mercantini" a dear fellow citizen of ours.
From 1979 on wards some consolidation works concerning "Podestà Palace"
and Mercantini theatre in the rebuilding of dressing room have been
carried out"
THE CURTAIN
It was painted by Ruffini. It portrays a local historical event: Virginia stabbed by her father in order not to be taken away by the Spanish. When the theatre was closed, the curtain was taken to the art gallery, then to the Red Room in the town hall, where it was restored. In the end it was taken back to the theatre as a back-drop.
