The Coghetti's Room - Pinacoteca Civica di Ripatransone




Francesco Coghetti was a painter from the city of Bergamo (Northern Italy)

His sketches had been acquired by Uno Gera and then donated to the museum of Ripatransone.

Francesco moved to Rome in the year 1821, where he experienced the romantic, purist and classicist and his masters were: Giuseppe Diotti e Vincenzo Camuccini.

The considerable number of religious subjects sketches reflects the consistency of the ecclesiastical orders, the most important and lucrative work of any artist, obtained from Coghetti and mainly come from the most prestigious Roman sites activated from the forties to the end of the seventh decade of the century .

The two small paintings with the Death of the Virgin represents the Lombard environment, with the main altar of the Cathedral of Piacenza.


Biography:

(12 July 1801 – 20 April 1875) was an Italian painter and art school administrator.

He was born to a wealthy family which enabled him to be educated at prestigious private schools. After completing his primary studies, he enrolled at the Accademia Carrara, where he studied with Giuseppe Diotti. In 1818, he won the Accademia's drawing competition.

In 1820, he moved to Milan. The following year, he won an award for drawing and design from the Brera Academy. This encouraged him to move to Rome and, thanks to his father's financial support, he was able to study with Vincenzo Camuccini. He also enjoyed the patronage of Cardinal Angelo Mai, who was a fellow Bergamaschi. In 1825, he was married. The 1830s were a very successful time for him, during which he won several awards and received a continual flow of commissions from all over Europe.

In 1844, he was offered the position of Director at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, but declined to accept. Fourteen years later, faced with declining commissions, he accepted a position as President of the Accademia di San Luca.

In the late 1860s, he became involved in politics as well as art, when preparations were being made for the Papal States to be annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. The Accademia was considered to be part of the Pope's temporal domain and was transformed into the "Royal Academy".
It was a difficult process and, because he had already come under criticism for his performance in office, he was relieved of his teaching duties in 1873 and suspended as President. Two years later, he died of apoplexy.

  • Two altar-pieces at the Accademia Carrara.
  • Several frescoes for the Palazzo Morlachi in Bergamo.
  • Frescoes in the cupola of the Bergamo Cathedral.
  • Scenes from the Life of Alexander. The Four Elements. The Triumph of Bacchus. The Battle of the Amazons; frescoes (1837–1839), now lost, for the Villa Torlonia, Rome.
  • The Assumption for a church in Porto Maurizio.
  • Ceiling frescoes of angels and prophets; Julius II lays the first stone of the St. Peter's Basilica and Sixtus IV blesses armies fighting Turks, and Christ clears moneylenders from the temple (Presbytery); (1846–1849) for the Cathedral in Savona.
  • Pope Eugene III blesses the armies of Amadeo II leaving for a crusade commissioned by Queen Maria Cristina in 1846 for the castle of Aglié.
  • Martyrdom of St. Lawrence (Sacristy) and St Stephen Martyrdom (chapel) for San Paolo fuori le Mura in 1853.

The Gleaner of Sapri's Manuscript (Written by the poet Luigi Mercantini)

At the top floor of the museum there is the original manuscript of The Gleaner of Sapri, Written by Luigi Mercantini. "They were three hundred, they were young and strong, and they died." This  is the famous refrain of what is probably one of the most famous poems of the Risorgimento, the gleaner of Sapri, composed by Luigi Mercantini in memory of the enterprise attempted by Carlo Pisacane in 1857 to unification Italy. In these sections of the Historical Museum is dedicated to the poet Risorgimento Luigi Mercantini with an Historical Ethnographic Collection. This floor, dedicated to the Italy of nineteenth, allows visitors to immerse themselves during the time of National Unity, capturing the feelings that animated the young patriots who infuocavano the Italian Province. Madonna and Child, Saint Martin, Saint Anthony Abbot By: Vittore Crivelli

  In the middle of this triptych there is the Madonna with her child in the act of blessing. The Madonna' s face is melancholic as she senses the end of her child will meet. The child holds a goldfinch, an angel with a sword and another one with crossed hands. Behind them a cane holds a cloth with a pomegranate and an apple hanging from it. Respectively they represents the church and the original sin. On the left there is Saint Martin bishop, in one hand he holds a finely bound hardback book with a model of a village with towers and crenelled walls. On the right there is Saint Antonio Abbott bishop who holds a book and a little bell. Above this triptych there is The Piety with tree Cherubini invented on collecting the blood of Christ. On the left there is the Madonna, on the right a praying Saint. At the feet of Christ there is Mary Magdalene. In the background a landscape. .
