This series
of letters shows to the reader the life of a teenager with a strong sense of
the adventure, love for the life and in particular curiosity.
In August
of 1907 he left Ripatransone for New York, not for tourism but for necessity.
He was the
ideal candidate of the "American Dream" in his letters there is no
trace of his relationship with the New Yorkers due to a low level of English
language but in this book there is a postcard of the young subway (it was three
years old)
The title
of this postcard is "The Brooklyn Subway" and there is a carriage
under a tunnel and passengers well dressed looking at the reader, as to witness
the novelty.
In my
opinion this was his "American Dream" a new culture based on
innovation and a positive approach to the future, living in New York meant be
always positive, and dense of curiosities, cultures, lifestyles, the beginning
of a great multicultural society, a living experience useful for
"de-mining" his fear for the diverse.
Camillo
during the WWII was the official translator of the US troops and he educated his child with their Ideals:
Democracy, Freedom and respect for the others.
In this
book there are the certificates of his education and the philosophical prize of
his brother Ernesto who studied with profit at the seminary of Ripatransone, he
will become a monsignor.
In the
second chapter there are the letters written to his future wife Virginia and
some Italians friends from New York.
The third
chapter is more cruel, because he was injured during an act of war and
hospitalized.
A curiosity
was written his words of love under the postage stamp, for two reasons to
defend their privacy and avoid the military censorship.
At the end
there are some very hold photographs of his parents, and others personages.
