The Museum
This museum was founded by Don Cesar Cellini in the 1877, it holds a collection of four hundred thousand object, but only a small percentage are on display.
The chronological period starts from prehistoric times, through the Roman period to the Middle Ages, to witness the ancient human presence and history of these hills.
The collected material comes from systematic and occasional discoveries, along the territories of Ripatransone, Grottammare, Cupra Marittima, Offida and other nearby towns.
The particularity of this museum is the section dedicated to the Piceni Civilisation (IX-VIII BC) the most precious objects are the "Large Rings With Six or Four Knots" being enveloped in an aura of mistery and mysticism. From this civilization we have received coins, pottery, lamps, sculptures and inscriptions in a still partly mysterious language.
The Roman section is also interesting because there is a mysterious funerary urn.
This section is also linked with the "Ager Cuprensis".
In this objects there are Latin inscriptions, fragments of statues, objects of everyday life, such as the "Bust of Venus" and a "Discus Thrower"
The medieval section collects the sculptures from ancient churches of Ripatransone, such as the baptismal font with griffins, and arouses curiosity a tablet with three clumsy and disproportionate figures, which could be a votive offering.
The Large Rings
This objects were found in the territory of Ascoli Piceno from the River "Tronto" to the River "Tenna" with the territories of Ripatransone, Offida, Cupra Marittima"
In the necropolis of "Capo di Termine" the archeologists discovered the presence of this rings, exclusively for the women, they were found on her pelvis.
Another theory tells us that they were not only used in the cemeteries but also for prestigious reasons dedicated only to the women for a particular function inside the society.
Another theory tells us that they have a religious/magical significance, connected with a priestly office.
Unfortunately today we cannot say the kind of cult and the divinity to which it was addressed. (La Civiltà Picena: Un Museo Un Territorio, Edvige Percossi Serenelli - Maroni Editore - 1989)
