CRIVELLI, Vittore (b. ca. 1440, Venezia, d. 1501/2, Venezia)

Italian painter, brother of Carlo Crivelli. Like Carlo, Vittore always signed himself as a Venetian.
He followed his brother to Zara, where he is documented from 1465. He probably spent some time in Carlo's workshop, although there is only one surviving collaborative work, a polyptych for the church of S Martino at Montesanmartino (in situ). In 1469 Vittore took on a pupil in Zara whom he agreed to train for eight years. In 1476 he bought a house there.

By 1481 he had moved to the Marches. In that year he signed a contract to paint a polyptych with the Virgin Enthroned with Saints (Rome, Pinacoteca Vaticana) for the church of the Madonna di Loreto in Montelparo, and from the same year also dates a polyptych painted for S Francesco in Fermo (Philadelphia, Museum of Art).

Vittore settled in Fermo, where he spent most of the rest of his life, apparently in comfortable circumstances. He was first mentioned as an inhabitant of the city in 1489. From this period there survives a series of signed works, mostly depicting the Virgin and Child, a small number of which are dated, including two further polyptychs for churches in Montesanmartino, one of 1489 (S Maria del Pozzo) and the other of 1490 (S Martino). In August 1501 he received a commission for an altarpiece (destroyed) destined for S Francesco at Osimo for which he was to be paid 200 ducats, slightly less than Carlo received for his altarpiece of 1493, but an indication that Vittore was similarly held in high esteem. In November 1501 Vittore was paid an advance of 55 ducats for this work, but he must have died not long afterwards, because the following year his son Giacomo Crivelli asked Antonio Solario to finish the altarpiece, which was completed in 1506.

Description

At the centre of this triptych there is the Madonna with her loved child on her knee, he is in the act of blessing the observer, in the other hand he holds a pomegranade the symbol of his blood.

On the sides of the throne there are two apples, the symbol of sin, according to the Eden garden.
At the feet of the Madonna, there is a red flower, probably a tulipan, symbol of love.

The face of the Madonna is charming, she has a crown, made of gold and diamonds, but her coat is full of geometric shapes.

On her left, there is St. Mark with the lion, who is leafing through a book and looks in the direction of the Madonna.

Madonna and Child, Saint Martin, Saint Anthony Abbot By: Vittore Crivelli

  In the middle of this triptych there is the Madonna with her child in the act of blessing. The Madonna' s face is melancholic as she senses the end of her child will meet. The child holds a goldfinch, an angel with a sword and another one with crossed hands. Behind them a cane holds a cloth with a pomegranate and an apple hanging from it. Respectively they represents the church and the original sin. On the left there is Saint Martin bishop, in one hand he holds a finely bound hardback book with a model of a village with towers and crenelled walls. On the right there is Saint Antonio Abbott bishop who holds a book and a little bell. Above this triptych there is The Piety with tree Cherubini invented on collecting the blood of Christ. On the left there is the Madonna, on the right a praying Saint. At the feet of Christ there is Mary Magdalene. In the background a landscape. .

The Madonna is seated on a throne, praying and looking at her Son, who is resting on her knees. On the left is Saint Sebastian, pierced by numerous arrows and looking at the baby Jesus. On the left there is Saint Cosima, wearing a red turban and holding a house in her hands.
