Vincenzo Pagani, Italian Painter (1490 - 1568)
Museo Sistino Di Montalto Marche
Analysis of the Work
The painting Madonna Enthroned between Saints Julian and Sebastian, created by Vincenzo Pagani around the mid-16th century, is one of the most significant treasures preserved at the Sixtus V Museum in Montalto delle Marche. The composition follows the classic Sacra Conversazione (Sacred Conversation) scheme.
1. The Madonna and Child
At the center of the composition, the Virgin sits atop a high throne. While she gazes directly at the viewer, the Child Jesus—seated on her lap—addresses the faithful by blessing Saint Julian. Julian, the patron saint of Montalto delle Marche, is depicted as a knight presenting a staff with a red banner and a white cross.
2. Composition and Figures
Saint Julian is positioned as an intermediary between the viewer and the divine, his body angled toward the throne. On the right stands Saint Sebastian, tied to a column and pierced by arrows. At the foot of the throne, a small child (likely a putto or angel) holds a banner, while a rolling hilly landscape unfolds in the background.
